Recent orchestral recordings

While shopping around on amazon.com I found many items to put on a list for future listening:

  • Michael Tilson Thomas; San Franscisco Symphony Mahler Symphony Cycle
  • Wagner’s The Testament Ring Series is a 50-year-old recording from the Bayreuth festival. Wow. Can I justify having another Ring setting in addition to my Solti? Probably!
  • I could probably spend years just listening from the ECM New Series.

Interesting post on Bagatellen’s blog regarding the Gielen Mahler cycle. Seems most folks choose their favorite Mahler by individual work rather than as a unified cycle. Since Easter is right around the corner I went ahead and ordered Gielen’s recording of the 2nd symphony. I find the pairing with the other works intriguing, too.
