Of far more importance than honoring some dead European’s 250th birthday is that of honoring a musical giant of the 20th century upon his 100th birthday.
Shostakovich’s symphonies and string quartets are among the best that the 20th C has given us. There’s a lot there for the listening.
My first introduction was the Festive Overture during high-school regional band; many years ago. A more memorable account was driving through Flemington, NJ, on a shopping trip and having the pleasure of hearing the Leningrad symphony on the radio, Bernstein conducting. It was a fine Summer day and a great experience. All other Shostakovich experiences have also been superb.
In Septemer 2006, the Exploring Music radio show will feature 10 hours of the maestro’s music. Knowing the excellence that Bill McGlaughlin produces, this should promise to be 10 hours that no music aficionado should miss, beginning on 18-Sep.
It promises to be a fitting tribute to one of the best, the very best, that the 20th century has to offer.
