Dave introduced each piece which grabbed the interest of my friend, a novice to jazz listening. For me, an avid jazz fan and musician, their set was the most stylistically diverse and the musicianship was solid. Bobby Militello’s alto solo on “Casandra” was the highlight of the whole day. He was simply outstanding and so inspired that I was drawn into every nuance. St. Louis blues was another opportunity for him to blow freely and stretch out. I think that is something that Dave Brubeck has always manged to do: to surround himself, a gifted composer, with musicians who are very talented and give them the freedom to express themselves.
